The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has assured Nigerians that every valid vote will count in the 2027 general elections, pledging to conduct a credible process that reflects the will of the electorate.

The assurance was given by the Head of Voter Education and Publicity at the Kwara State office of INEC, Dr Adejumo Peter, during a seminar organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ilorin.

He said the commission would strictly adhere to its guidelines to ensure free, fair and transparent elections based on the principle of one person, one vote.

Dr Peter dismissed claims that stockpiling Permanent Voter Cards could influence election outcomes, noting that technological improvements had made it impossible for individuals to vote with another person’s PVC.

He added that politicians who rely on such tactics were out of touch with current electoral realities.

He urged political parties and candidates to conduct issue-based campaigns, avoid violence and respect the outcome of the elections.

According to him, peaceful elections depend on compliance with electoral rules and allowing voters to make informed choices.

Also speaking, the Head of INEC’s Legal Unit in Kwara State, Atata Abdulfatai, described the amended Electoral Act 2026 as a significant reform that would strengthen transparency, deepen internal democracy within political parties and expand the use of technology in the conduct of elections.
