The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced that the naira equivalent of $100,000 has been paid to each member of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, NSC , as part of the Presidential Reward for their triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
The commission also disclosed that each official of the team received the naira equivalent of $50,000.
According to the NSC, the payments were made into the bank accounts of the players and officials on September 9, 2026, with all beneficiaries confirming that they had received the funds.
D’Tigress secured the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket championship in 2025, making it their fifth successive title and seventh overall victory in the competition.
The NSC said the latest payments marked the completion of all the reward packages pledged to the team by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, the commission said the Presidential Rewards included three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, national honours under the Order of the Niger and financial awards.
“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a 3-Bedroom flat in Abuja, national honours of OON and Naira equivalent of $USD 100,000 to players and $USD 50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement said.
The commission recalled that the players and officials had earlier received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, alongside certificates of national honours, in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers held in Lyon, France.
It noted that the documents were formally signed by President Tinubu.
The NSC explained that the release of the financial component came after D’Tigress featured at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The commission further stated that the Super Falcons, who had also been promised Presidential Rewards, had received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja as well as certificates of national honours.
According to the NSC, the Falcons were presented with the documents during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Morocco in July and August 2026.
It added that the financial aspect of their reward was expected to be released before the team’s next official engagements.
The commission said the Super Falcons were entitled to the same financial package, consisting of the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official.
The NSC said the reward packages were part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian athletes.
The statement said, “This unprecedented rewards to the players and athletes by the Federal Government of Nigeria is in alignment with the Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR which places athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards top on the priority list.”
The commission expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for his continued backing of Nigerian sports, noting that his policies had strengthened its reform programme and efforts towards building a sustainable sports economy.
It also acknowledged the contributions of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, as well as the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, for their roles in delivering the rewards.
The NSC said the cooperation among the relevant institutions made it possible for the Presidential Rewards to be implemented “in record time within the due process requirements.”
