The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has begun a nationwide enforcement operation to remove alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 millilitres from circulation, in line with the Federal Government’s ban on the products.

In a statement posted on its X account on Wednesday, the agency said the exercise was being carried out across the six geopolitical zones following the closure of manufacturing facilities that failed to comply with the directive. It added that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health.

NAFDAC said enforcement teams had been deployed to markets, motor parks, retail outlets, bars and other distribution channels to identify, seize and remove the banned alcoholic products. The agency also directed manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and transporters to immediately surrender any remaining stock.

The agency warned that continued production, distribution, possession or sale of the prohibited products constitutes a violation of the law and could result in seizure, regulatory sanctions and prosecution.

NAFDAC said the crackdown was intended to curb underage drinking, harmful alcohol consumption and substance abuse, particularly among children and young people.

It urged the public to refrain from purchasing the banned products and report offenders to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its dedicated hotline.
