The political atmosphere ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections has taken another turn following a growing disagreement between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
The dispute centres on the so-called Rainbow Coalition being promoted by Wike and his political allies. Wike has repeatedly stated that the coalition is designed to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while allowing political parties to maintain their identities and contest other elective positions.
However, the Progressive Governors’ Forum has rejected any political arrangement it believes could weaken the APC or its candidates. The governors’ position has brought the disagreement into the open and created a debate over whether support for Tinubu should be coordinated through the APC structure or through a broader political coalition.
The Guardian reports that APC governors have expressed concern that politicians could support Tinubu at the presidential level while backing candidates from other parties in governorship and legislative elections. Wike, on the other hand, maintains that supporting Tinubu does not require the PDP or other parties to abandon their own candidates.
Wike has also dismissed criticism from the APC Governors’ Forum, arguing that the coalition is separate from the APC. His position has been that political parties remain free to participate in elections at different levels while individual politicians make choices concerning the presidential contest.
The development has therefore created a complicated political arrangement ahead of 2027. Tinubu is the leader of the APC, but the Rainbow Coalition is attempting to bring politicians from different political backgrounds into a support network around his presidential bid.
The PDP has also publicly backed Wike’s coalition, adding another dimension to the dispute. The party has criticised APC governors and argued that the coalition reflects dissatisfaction with the performance of some governors.
For the APC, the immediate concern is maintaining cohesion among its governors, national leadership and political structures. For Wike and his allies, the emphasis is on building a wider network that cuts across party boundaries.
The disagreement is still unfolding, and its eventual impact on the 2027 campaign structure will depend on how the various parties, governors and political groups reconcile their interests in the months ahead.
