The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed an online publication falsely presented as a special announcement by the commission regarding governorship candidates in six states.
The affected states are Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.
INEC made this clarification in a public notice released on Monday and circulated through its verified social media platforms.
“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the statement read.
The electoral commission called on Nigerians to ignore the misleading publication and avoid circulating it.
It further urged the public to obtain reliable information from its official announcements, press statements and other verified communication platforms.
“The Commission further wishes to clarify that any information suggesting that INEC has issued a special announcement concerning governorship candidates in the aforementioned states is false,” it added.
INEC also encouraged Nigerians to exercise caution and confirm the authenticity of electoral information through its recognised channels to prevent falling victim to false reports.
The commission provided its official website as inecnigeria.org, with @inecnigeria as its handles on X and Instagram. Its Facebook page is listed as INEC Nigeria, while its news portal is inecnews.com.
For enquiries and additional clarification, INEC provided its call centre number as 0700-2255-4632, short code 4632, telephone lines 090844444333 and 09050858629, as well as the email address iccc@inec.gov.ng.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to “keeping the public accurately informed and urged Nigerians to obtain electoral information only through its official communication channels.”
Newsmen reports that the warning was issued two days after INEC released the final lists of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections, amid reports that some candidates’ names were missing in certain states.
