The Nigeria Police Force has barred Amotekun, vigilante groups, hunters’ associations and other non-state security outfits from participating in the Osun State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, announced this in a statement on Wednesday, warning political parties, candidates and their supporters against violence, intimidation, vote buying and other electoral offences.

The police said only constitutionally recognised security agencies would be involved in providing securing for the election. It warned that non-state security groups would not be allowed to escort election materials, guard polling units, mount checkpoints or carry arms for election related activities.

The police also warned that anyone involved in electoral violence, including sponsors, would be arrested and prosecuted.

It said the joint security deployment would cover all 30 local government areas of the state, with personnel providing security for voters, electoral officials, journalists, observers, polling units and collation centres.

The Force further banned firearms and other dangerous weapons around polling units and collation centres, except for authorised security personnel on election duty.

The Inspector General of Police directed officers deployed for the poll to remain professional, impartial and respectful of human rights and the rule of law.
