Former Osun State Governor and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has opened up about his marriage, declaring that he has remained faithful to his wife since their wedding.
Aregbesola made the disclosure while addressing supporters at an ADC campaign rally in Ejigbo, Osun State, ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.
Speaking in Yoruba, the former governor said his fidelity to his wife was rooted in his relationship with God and a personal commitment he had made to remain faithful throughout their marriage.
He acknowledged that it might be difficult for some men to make a similar claim but insisted that he had kept his commitment to his wife.
“Because of your fear, I never had any intimacy with another woman since I married my wife,” Aregbesola said, according to a report by Tribune Online.
The statement adds another personal dimension to Aregbesola’s public image, as the former governor has previously spoken warmly about his relationship with his wife, Sherifat.
In 2020, while celebrating Sherifat’s 60th birthday, Aregbesola recalled that they got married in 1983 after meeting in 1981. He described her as his companion, adviser, guide, protector, teacher, lover and manager, while expressing gratitude to God for their marriage.
Sherifat has also been publicly associated with her husband’s political career and was described by the former Osun State Government as a supportive wife during Aregbesola’s administration.
Aregbesola’s latest comment comes at a time when he is playing a prominent role in the ADC’s campaign in Osun. The former governor, who previously served as Minister of Interior, has been actively involved in its mobilisation ahead of the state election scheduled for August 15.
