Justice Faruku Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court has regained his freedom after spending one week in captivity following his abduction by gunmen.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the development in a statement on Monday by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Bashir Usman.
According to the statement, the judge was released on Monday and has safely returned home.
The police said the judge’s release was verified by both his family and the Kebbi State Ministry of Justice.
Although the abductors reportedly demanded a ransom, the command said no payment was made, in line with its policy against negotiating with kidnappers through ransom.
The Police Command added that security agencies have stepped up efforts to identify and apprehend those behind the abduction, assuring the public that investigations are ongoing.
It also appealed to residents to provide credible information that could assist in the investigation, promising that all tips would be handled with strict confidentiality.
The Command commended residents of the state and other security agencies for their cooperation and support throughout the rescue efforts.
Meanwhile, a member of the judge’s family confirmed that Justice Bunza had arrived home safely, expressing gratitude to God for his safe return.
“We are overjoyed and deeply thankful to God for bringing him back safely after one week in captivity,” the family member said.
The family also appreciated the Kebbi State Judiciary, security agencies, and the people of the state for their prayers, encouragement, and solidarity during the difficult period.
According to the relation, details surrounding the circumstances of the judge’s release will be disclosed at a later time.
