Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over a suspicious payment made into one of his private bank accounts, alleging that his confidential banking details might have been compromised.
Abubakar, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, disclosed this in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Friday.
According to the statement, the account received a transfer from an individual unknown to him, with the description “Contribution Electioneering Campaign”. It said neither Atiku nor his campaign team authorised, solicited or had prior knowledge of the payment.
The former vice president described the development as troubling, questioning how the details of a private account that was not publicly available were obtained by an unknown person.
He expressed concern that a breach of financial privacy could expose citizens to threats from criminals if such information falls into the wrong hands.
Abubakar said the incident raised wider questions about the protection of Nigerians’ banking information, particularly the possibility that confidential details could have been accessed through individuals with privileged access.
He urged security agencies and Nigerians to take note of the development, describing it as part of a series of suspicious activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He, however, said he remained focused on his political activities to provide what he described as credible leadership for Nigerians.
