Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has linked the lack of electricity in rural communities in Nigeria to growing population and low recreational activities.
Fayose made the remarks on Friday in Abuja after his inauguration as Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency governing board.
Speaking on the need to improve electricity access in rural communities, the former governor said the absence of power leaves residents with few alternatives for recreation.
He said many people in such communities retire to their homes early, leaving them with little to do other than engage with their family members.
He said, “After 7 o’clock, it gets dark there. Everybody is engaging their wives. And the population simply becomes double. The simple problem is because there is lack of electricity.”
The former governor argued that improved electricity supply would encourage nightlife and provide residents with more recreational activities outside their homes.
Fayose was inaugurated alongside other members of the REA governing board by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.
Other members inaugurated include Ahmadu Abubakar and Ilyasu Makinta, as well as three other non-executive directors. Abba Aliyu was also formally inaugurated as the agency’s Managing Director.
The Rural Electrification Agency is responsible for expanding electricity access to underserved and unserved communities in Nigeria.
