France has appointed football legend Zinedine Zidane as the new head coach of its national team, bringing an end to his five-year absence from management.
The former Real Madrid boss replaces Didier Deschamps, whose 14-year spell ended after France’s semi-final exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The French Football Federation announced Zidane’s appointment on Tuesday.
Speaking at his unveiling, the 54-year-old described the role as a great honour, saying managing the French national team was the only coaching job he wanted after leaving Real Madrid in 2021.
Zidane revealed that he rejected several offers during his time away from football while waiting for the opportunity to lead his country.
He also praised Deschamps for his contributions and pledged to build on the team’s recent achievements.
The former midfielder enjoyed a successful managerial career with Real Madrid, winning three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles and two Spanish league crowns.
As a player, he inspired France to victory at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and won the Ballon d’Or the same year.
