The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the performance of ongoing infrastructure projects in the territory will play a significant role in determining the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s prospects in the 2027 elections.
Wike made the remarks on Thursday after inspecting the Apo-Karshi and Bwari-Kubwa road projects. He said the completion of major infrastructure in neglected satellite communities would provide residents with tangible evidence to assess the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The minister maintained that good governance remained an important yardstick for measuring the success of any administration, insisting that the Tinubu government had moved beyond making promises to tackling some of the longstanding infrastructure needs of FCT residents.
“If good governance is a barometer to measure whether a government has succeeded or not, then we have nothing to fear.
“Now, the Tinubu administration has come and it’s not only listening to you, it’s not only caring for you, it’s solving your problems. Why will they want to change their mind?” Wike said.
He further connected the administration’s infrastructure achievements with preparations for the 2027 elections, arguing that opposition parties would have to campaign against projects that residents could physically see and evaluate.
“This is the campaign. The people who will come, what will they come with? They will tell them stories. But we have not come with stories, we have come with facts, verifiable facts,” he said.
Wike also expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 presidential election and voiced support for the political aspirations of Senator Philip Aduda and House of Representatives candidate John Gabaya in the FCT.
“I can beat my chest, I can close my eyes and go home and sleep with my two eyes closed, that Tinubu will emerge. I have no fear at all,” he said.
Speaking on the expansion of infrastructure across the territory, Wike said the Renewed Hope Agenda had changed the previous approach of concentrating development mainly within Abuja city centre by taking major road projects to satellite towns.
“The Renewed Hope administration has redefined infrastructure delivery as far as FCT is concerned, not just within the city, but also within the satellite towns,” he said.
He added that the administration had shown its commitment to extending development beyond the city centre to communities that had for years called for improved infrastructure.
Providing an update on the projects inspected, Wike said work on the long-delayed Apo-Karshi road was expected to be completed in November.
He also disclosed that the dualisation of the Bwari-Kubwa road had been scheduled for completion in December.
According to the FCT minister, construction work on both projects is expected to receive greater attention from the first week of October as the period of heavy seasonal rainfall begins to ease.
