ASUU threatens industrial action over non-implementation of newly signed agreement
Nigeria’s tertiary education sector is facing another period of uncertainty as disputes between university lecturers and government authorities continue to generate industrial action.

Recent reports indicate that the Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite strike at three universities in Lagos.

The development has renewed concerns about interruptions to academic calendars and the effect of industrial disputes on students who already face prolonged periods of study because of previous disruptions.

University strikes in Nigeria have historically been linked to disagreements over funding, salaries, conditions of service, agreements with government and the autonomy of tertiary institutions.

The latest development comes at a time when authorities are under pressure to improve the quality of public education and ensure that universities have adequate resources.

Students are among the groups most directly affected when academic activities are suspended.

For families, prolonged disruptions can also increase accommodation, transportation and other education-related expenses because students may have to remain in school locations or return home.

University authorities and government representatives are therefore expected to engage with ASUU to seek a resolution.

The current dispute also raises broader questions about the sustainability of Nigeria’s public university system and whether repeated strikes can be avoided through more effective implementation of agreements.

Education stakeholders have repeatedly called for predictable funding and stronger institutional mechanisms for resolving disputes before they escalate into strikes.

The immediate focus remains on negotiations and efforts to restore academic activities.
