President Bola Tinubu has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible governorship election in Osun State.
The election is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, with 15 candidates contesting the governorship seat. They include incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, All Progressives Congress candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged INEC to ensure that the election is conducted in an orderly and credible manner.
He said the Osun election should serve as an opportunity for the electoral commission to demonstrate its preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
Tinubu also urged voters to come out and exercise their constitutional right without fear, while warning against actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.
The president directed the Inspector General of Police and other security chiefs involved in the election to provide adequate security at polling units and prevent troublemakers from interfering with the exercise.
He stressed that voters and electoral officials must be protected from intimidation and violence to enable them to perform their duties freely.
Tinubu assured the people of Osun State that necessary security measures had been put in place to guarantee a peaceful election.
He said the outcome of the poll must reflect the wishes of the electorate, stressing that Nigeria’s elections must be credible and their results must represent the will of the people.
