The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has ordered the arrest and prosecution of an Air Peace driver accused of blocking the Lagos Airport runway during Tuesday’s picketing of the airline by aviation unions.

The unions, backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, began picketing Air Peace over alleged violations of workers’ rights and the non-remittance of five per cent Ticket Sales Charge to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority.

A source at the airport said the driver allegedly drove a bus onto the airside and left it there during the protest.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, subsequently towed the vehicle away to clear the area.

NCAA spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the incident and said the authority had directed that the driver be identified, arrested and prosecuted.

Achimugu described the alleged action as unacceptable, saying the relevant provisions of the law would be applied after investigation.

However, Air Peace spokesperson, Efe Whiskey Osifo, denied the allegation, insisting that the bus did not block the runway.
