A teenage student has killed his grandparents before opening fire at a secondary school near Bangkok, Thailand, killing six other people, including three teachers and three students.
Police said the teenager first used his grandfather’s handgun to shoot his grandparents before heading to Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, where he carried out the attack.
Fifteen other students were injured while attempting to flee the school during the shooting, according to Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee. Emergency responders and police were deployed to the school as parents rushed to pick their children.
The suspect, who was a student at the school, was also reported dead. However, accounts differed on whether he was shot by police or died by suicide.
The incident has renewed concerns about gun violence in Thailand, which has one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in the region.
The country has witnessed several deadly shootings in recent years, including a 2022 attack at a nursery in which 36 people, including 24 children, were killed.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul described the latest shooting as a terrible incident and questioned how such an attack could have occurred.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
