The Incorporated Trustees of the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ United Association (SOKAPU) have filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Kaduna against the Minister of Works, David Umahi, over the death of nurse Mary Habila, who was attached to the minister’s medical team.

Habila reportedly died on June 27 at Umahi’s residence, an incident that has sparked public concern and renewed calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

SOKAPU also joined Habila Tanko Wisdom, the deceased’s father, the Attorney-General of Ebonyi State and the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police as respondents in the suit.

The association is seeking a court order directing that an autopsy be conducted to determine the cause of Habila’s death.

It is also demanding N20 billion in damages from the minister, alleging a breach of duty of care while the deceased was under his custody.

The suit follows earlier assurances by the Ebonyi State Police Command that an autopsy would be carried out despite reported objections from some family members.

Umahi had also requested the Commissioner of Police to ensure an autopsy is conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the nurse’s death.
