The Lagos State Government has clarified that there is no restriction on movement during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, stressing that residents cannot be arrested simply for moving around during the exercise.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the clarification on Saturday in response to a post on X by a user seeking information about an alleged arrest linked to the sanitation exercise at the Ikeja Police Station.
He said such arrests do not reflect the policy of the state government.
According to the commissioner, the monthly environmental sanitation exercise was reintroduced to promote environmental cleanliness and is backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
He, however, noted that the law does not provide for any restriction on movement during the exercise.
Wahab added that the government’s focus is on encouraging voluntary public participation in environmental sanitation rather than relying on enforcement.
He urged Lagos residents to embrace the exercise as a shared civic responsibility aimed at maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment.
