A non-denominational Christian organisation, Christian Conscience, has appealed to politicians preparing for the 2027 general elections to avoid using ethnic and religious sentiments as campaign tools.

The group said political campaigns should concentrate on issues capable of improving the lives of Nigerians and advancing national development, rather than exploiting the country’s ethnic and religious differences for electoral gains.

According to the organisation, politicians and their supporters should promote messages that strengthen national unity and peaceful coexistence. It warned that campaigns built around ethnic or religious divisions could heighten tensions and create an environment conducive to violence and intimidation.

Christian Conscience also urged political actors to discourage the activities of thugs and other groups capable of disrupting the electoral process.

The organisation’s position comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with various politicians and interest groups already beginning to mobilise support.

The group maintained that Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as an asset and not manipulated for political advantage, urging all stakeholders to place the country’s stability and development above partisan interests.
