The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing new measures to strengthen the regulation and administration of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.
The bill was approved during Monday’s plenary after lawmakers considered and adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which conducted public hearings and consulted key stakeholders before submitting its recommendations.
Speaking after the bill’s passage, the Speaker of the House, Ismail Falgore, praised lawmakers for their contributions, describing the amendment as a major step towards improving the governance of private and voluntary schools in Kano State.
A key provision of the amendment establishes the office of the Executive Secretary to enhance the effective management of the board overseeing private and voluntary institutions.
The legislation also requires private schools and other voluntary educational institutions to obtain official approval before increasing tuition or any other fees. The measure is intended to shield parents and guardians from arbitrary fee hikes by ensuring that all proposed increases are subject to regulatory scrutiny.
According to the Assembly, the amendment reflects the outcome of extensive stakeholder consultations held during public hearings organised by the House Committee on Education before the bill received final legislative approval.
