Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to apologize to Nigerians and step down over the controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) accounts.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Phrank Shaibu, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Abubakar said the conflicting explanations from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over the opening of the PFIPC accounts had raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability.
He noted that while the Accountant-General’s Office reportedly denied authorizing the accounts and alleged forgery, the CBN told the House of Representatives that the accounts were opened on the Accountant-General’s directive after following due process.
According to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, both versions cannot be correct, and the contradiction has created a credibility crisis for the Tinubu administration.
He challenged the president to clarify which account he believes and questioned why an independent investigation had yet to be launched.
Abubakar also criticised the silence of the Attorney-General of the Federation, saying it had further increased public doubts about the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth.
