At least 30 people are feared dead after a canoe carrying about 40 passengers capsized in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening at Malamawar Yandutse village.
An eyewitness said most of the passengers on board were women and children when the canoe overturned.
The source said rescue efforts were ongoing, while families of the victims had been asked to help identify recovered bodies for burial.
Confirming the incident, the Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Muhammad Bala Sanusi, said rescue operations were still underway, and the exact number of casualties and survivors had yet to be established.
Sanusi said the cause of the accident remained unclear, adding that SEMA officials were working with local residents to locate survivors and account for all passengers aboard the canoe.
The Chairman of the Emergency Management Committee, Malam Habibu Dauda, also confirmed the incident. He urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
Rescue operations was ongoing as of press time.
