Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has called on the Blues to make good use of the international break to address their shortcomings following their disappointing 3-0 Premier League loss to Brentford.
Chelsea made a strong start at the Gtech Community Stadium and controlled large portions of the opening half. However, their display declined after the interval as Brentford found the net three times without reply to claim maximum points.
The result means Chelsea have collected seven points from their first five league games, underlining the need for improvement as head coach Xabi Alonso continues to develop the team.
Speaking in a post published on Chelsea’s official website on Sunday, Colwill admitted that the team’s performances in the early stages of the season have produced mixed results.
“[There have been] some good bits, some other not so good bits,” the defender said.
The 23-year-old defender, who spent a significant part of last season sidelined with a knee injury, was left out of England’s squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches.
As a result, Colwill will remain at Chelsea during the international break, giving him an opportunity to continue training under Alonso while the team works on correcting the problems highlighted by the Brentford defeat.
Colwill said the break should instead be viewed as an opportunity for the squad to regroup, work on its weaknesses and return to action in better shape.
“Luckily we’ve got a while now to try and improve,” he said.
“Hopefully, we will come out the other side flying, pick up our play, and become a better team.”
Chelsea will use the period away from competitive action to assess their opening weeks of the campaign before resuming Premier League football, with Colwill confident the squad can continue developing under Alonso.
