Nigeria inflation falls to 15.39% in August - NBS

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined slightly to 15.39 percent in August 2026, according to the latest Consumer Price Index released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The August figure represents a marginal decline from the 15.43 percent recorded in July.

The NBS data also showed that month-on-month inflation slowed to 0.71 percent in August, compared with 1.57 percent in July.

The figures indicate that the pace of price increases moderated during the month, although Nigerians continue to face high prices for food, transport, energy and other essential goods.

The year-on-year figure is also significantly below the inflation rate recorded a year earlier following changes in the statistical measurement period.

However, lower inflation does not mean that prices have returned to previous levels. It means that prices are increasing at a slower rate.

This distinction remains important for households because many consumers continue to experience pressure from elevated food and transportation costs.

Guardian reported that food prices were still trending higher, with food inflation at 19.57 percent.

The government has continued to emphasise economic reforms aimed at improving production, attracting investment and strengthening the naira.

Businesses, however, continue to face challenges linked to energy costs, foreign exchange, logistics and access to credit.

The Central Bank’s monetary policy decisions will remain important as policymakers attempt to balance inflation control with economic growth.

For households, the key issue is whether the moderation in inflation eventually translates into greater stability in the prices of everyday goods.

The August figures therefore provide a mixed picture: inflation is moderating, but the cost-of-living challenge remains significant.
