The House of Representatives has clarified that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, did not secure loans without obtaining the required approval of the National Assembly.
The clarification was given on Thursday by the Deputy Spokesperson of the House, Philip Agbese.
Agbese said there was no evidence to support the allegation that the FCT Minister obtained loans without legislative approval.
The statement followed claims by Senator Ireti Kingibe that the FCT Administration had incurred debts without obtaining the necessary authorisation from the legislature.
Kingibe said she brought the matter to the attention of the Senate leadership after reviewing information from the Debt Management Office, DMO, covering August 2023 to March 2026.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the lawmaker said she had not witnessed Wike appear before the Senate to request approval for any borrowing.
“I have never seen Wike come to the National Assembly and before the Senate to ask for approval of anything,” Kingibe had said.
In his reaction, Agbese dismissed the claim that Wike had obtained funds without the knowledge of the National Assembly or acted in breach of the law.
“Wike has committed no infraction in borrowings. There is no basis for the allegation that he has been borrowing money behind the back of the National Assembly,” he said.
