The inaugural edition of the National Intermediate Games, which was initially slated to take place in Lagos from October 1 to 15, 2026, has been shifted to the first quarter of 2027 to give the organisers additional time to finalise preparations and ensure a world-class inaugural event.
The decision was reached after the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the National Sports Commission (NSC) and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist conducted a detailed review of the level of preparedness for the Games.
The Lagos State Sports Commission formally notified the NSC of the postponement following the outcome of the Joint Technical Meeting held between September 3 and 6, 2026.
The technical assessment covered key aspects of the Games, including the proposed sports venues, the sporting events to be featured, technical standards, rules and regulations, logistics and other operational requirements necessary for a successful national multi-sport competition.
While the review found that the Games were technically capable of proceeding on the original dates, it determined that the time left for preparations was not sufficient to guarantee an inaugural edition that would meet the expected standards.
Rather than risk compromising the quality of the event due to the limited preparation period, the organisers decided to postpone the Games. The additional time will allow outstanding issues to be resolved and help ensure that the maiden edition lays a solid foundation for future editions.
