Australian footballer Cristian Volpato is under police investigation after allegedly returning a positive roadside oral fluid test for cocaine following two speeding incidents in Sydney.
According to New South Wales Police, the 22-year-old midfielder was first stopped late Thursday night on the Anzac Bridge for allegedly driving between 86km/h and 94km/h in a 60km/h zone. A roadside breath test returned a negative result. About two hours later, he was stopped again after allegedly travelling at 109km/h in the same speed zone.
Police said Volpato allegedly tested positive for cocaine during the second stop.
He was issued a speeding infringement notice, and his international driver’s licence was suspended for six months, barring him from driving in New South Wales.
A secondary oral fluid sample has been sent for laboratory analysis as investigations continue.
Volpato, who recently switched his international allegiance from Italy to Australia and featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently plays for Italian Serie A side Sassuolo.
Football Australia and the club are yet to comment on the matter.
