The Jigawa State Government has appointed Lawan Muhammad Sani as the new Emir of Gumel, making him the 17th Emir of the ancient emirate. His appointment follows the death of his father, the late Emir, HRH Ahmed Sani II.
Governor Umar Namadi approved the appointment after receiving recommendations from the traditional kingmakers of the Gumel Emirate Council and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
The newly appointed monarch takes over from his father, who passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after spending 46 years on the throne.
Before his elevation, Sani held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel. He also worked as the Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA.
A statement issued by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Bala Ibrahim, said Governor Namadi congratulated the new Emir and wished him “many years of successful service to the Gumel Emirate and the nation.”
The governor also praised members of the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Nasoro, for their contribution to the selection of the new monarch.
Namadi equally thanked the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, who are members of the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, for providing their “invaluable advice” throughout the appointment process.
Meanwhile, the state government reiterated its sympathy to the late Emir’s family, the Gumel Emirate and residents across Jigawa State following the monarch’s death.
The government prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the deceased, asking that his shortcomings be forgiven, his good deeds accepted and that he be granted Al-Jannatul Firdaus.
