Nigeria has confirmed plans for the withdrawal of about 200 United States military personnel deployed to support the country’s counterterrorism efforts.
The Defence Headquarters says the planned withdrawal should not be interpreted as a breakdown in security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.
According to the military, the American personnel were deployed for specific operational and counterterrorism purposes, and the two countries will continue to cooperate in the fight against terrorism.
The development comes as Nigeria continues to battle terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across several parts of the country.
