Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing worsening health, bringing an early end to his tenure which was due to expire in 2028.
In a resignation letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, the 76-year-old said deteriorating physical and mental health had made it impossible for him to continue carrying out the responsibilities of the presidency. Shahabuddin also confirmed his resignation in a brief telephone conversation with AFP.
Shahabuddin, who was elected in 2023 with the backing of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, had faced growing pressure to step down after Hasina was removed from office during a student-led uprising in 2024.
He also denied allegations that he communicated with the former leader while receiving medical treatment in London earlier this year.
Before the resignation was confirmed, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had said the government had yet to receive any formal notice from the president.
Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, a president must submit a resignation letter to the Speaker of Parliament for the process to take effect.
