The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, the winner of Saturday’s governorship election.
Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, defeated his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), after results from all 30 local government areas were collated at the state collation centre in Osogbo.
The incumbent governor polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji recorded 444,815 votes. The result gave Adeleke a lead of 66,252 votes over his APC challenger.
Adeleke also won in 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victories in the remaining 11 LGAs.
The declaration came in the early hours of Sunday after INEC officials completed the collation and verification of results from across the state.
The Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Joshua Olalekan Ogunwale, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, declared Adeleke the winner.
The election had attracted keen attention, with Adeleke seeking to retain the governorship against Oyebamiji and other candidates.
With the declaration, Adeleke is set to remain in office for another four years, extending his tenure as governor of the South-West state.
The victory marks another electoral success for Adeleke, who first became governor after winning the 2022 Osun governorship election.
