The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the purported nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2027 presidential election by the Taminu Turaki faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The faction had announced that it manually submitted Jonathan’s nomination, along with the names of its governorship, National Assembly and state assembly candidates, after it was allegedly denied access to INEC’s electronic nomination portal.
However, INEC dismissed the submission, insisting that nominations could only be made through its designated online portal, in line with its regulations and guidelines.
The commission said it would not recognise manual submission of candidates.
INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, said the commission would only process nominations received through the approved electronic platform, stressing that manual submissions are invalid.
The development effectively nullifies the nomination submitted by the Turaki faction and raises fresh uncertainty over the status of the candidates presented by the group.
